Crackdown on violence against public sector workers

Unison has welcomed a pledge by Tony Blair that there will
be crack down on people who attack public sector workers if Labour is elected
for a second term.

The Prime Minster promised harsher penalties for people who
assault frontline workers such as doctors, nurses and teachers, during a speech
to an audience at Newport in Shropshire

Dave Prentis, Unison’s general secretary, said, “Last year
Unison carried out a survey of health workers which showed that nearly half the
nurses and 60 per cent of ambulance workers interviewed had been attacked in
the previous 12 months. That is why the Unison welcomes the government’s commitment
to crack down on those convicted of assaulting people working in the public sector.”
