Ericsson to cut a tenth of its worldwide workforce

UK jobs in Swedish telecoms firms
Ericsson are under threat after the company announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs
worldwide from a workforce of 100,000.

More than half the job losses will
come from outside Sweden, but the company has not revealed where the cuts will
be enforced.

Bob Shannon, National Officer for
the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU), has spoken to senior
Ericsson HR managers and stressed the union wanted to avoid any compulsory
redundancies.

"There are a number of
alternatives to these job cuts such as outsourcing and joint ventures,"
added Shannon.

The mobile phone giant reported a
pre-tax loss of £333 million in the first quarter of 2001, reflecting the
depressed telecoms market.
