The NHS is to create 1,000 new
specialist registrar posts in hospitals over the next three years as part of a
plan to create 7,500 more consultants.
But there is concern that the
increase will be insufficient to replace the number of consultants due for
retirement.
Professor Peter Armstrong, president
of the Royal College of Radiologists, said there were already registrar
radiologist positions that are not filled.
He said, “The real issue is about how many
specialist registrars are in place in 2001 and 2002.”
