Drive to improve diversity in civil service

The
Government is to offer staff from ethnic minorities the chance to work
alongside ministers as part of a drive to improve the diversity of its
workforce.

The
move, which is expected to start next month at the Department for Education and
Employment, is part of the Government’s modernising campaign and it is hoped
will increase the numbers of ethnic minority staff at senior management level
within Whitehall.

Around
35 people will take up the six-month to two-year secondments, working alongside
ministers and helping to shape Government policies.

“The
DfEE aims to use the secondments to change the nature of its civil servants.
Civil servants often move from government department to government department
and because of this are very inward looking. The secondments should make the
department an outward looking, forward thinking organisation,” said a DfEE
spokesperson.
