Carlton staff threaten strike over low pay increase

At least 300 staff at Carlton TV are balloting for
industrial action in response to the management’s offer of a 2.5 per cent pay
rise.

Members affiliated to the broadcasting union BECTU and NUJ
are campaigning for an above-inflation pay rise and a guaranteed £1,000 for
workers employed at Birmingham, 
Nottingham and Abingdon.

The claim includes key improvements on holidays, redundancy,
mileage and allowances and improved conditions for short-term contract workers.

“Carlton TV have had a very successful year. But they are
pleading poverty and a drop in advertising revenue,” said BECTU’s lead
negotiator, Trish Lavelle.

Carlton reported an operating profit of £320 million for the
financial year ending December 2000.
