An aide to former US President Bill Clinton is to head the
UK’s biggest nursing union.
Beverly Malone has been offered the position of general
secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, and is likely to confirm the
position in the next few days. The RCN represents 330,000 nurses.
Malone, former president of the American Nurses Association
and an official in the Clinton administration, will become the first black
woman to take the job.
The post became available following the resignation of
Christine Hancock after nearly 12 years at the RCN.
Speaking on behalf of RCN Council, RCN Chair Debbie Murdock
said, “Beverly Malone has outstanding qualifications to be our next General
Secretary. It reflects the standing of
the Royal College of Nursing that we can attract a world class nurse leader of
this calibre.”
