Tanker drivers balloting over strike action

Trans European’s tanker drivers are to be balloted for strike action, which
could threaten fuel supplies.

Hundreds of drivers who deliver
petrol for Shell will begin voting today after they rejected a proposed
two-year wage deal. The T&G union claims the complicated pay deal would
only be worth an increase of 2.5 per cent on basic pay.

The tanker drivers represent about
one sixth of the country’s fuel tanker fleet. The results of the ballot will be
known in mid-February.

The union is seeking a 5 per
cent pay rise. It claims that the drivers received no pay increase last year
because negotiations were held up by the blockades at fuel depots over petrol
prices.

A spokesperson for P&O
Trans European claimed that talks over pay were “progressing”.
