A furniture company has agreed
an out-of-court settlement with a former employee who claimed he was forced out
of his job after telling his bosses he was HIV positive.
Former salesman Michael Scott,
33, of Newcastle, who worked at Barker and Stonehouse in the city, had claimed
he was transferred from sales duties to a warehouse post after informing
managers of his condition.
He alleged he was forced to
wear gloves and overalls while working and launched an action against the
company for constructive dismissal under the Disability Discrimination Act.
A joint statement issued by
Barker and Stonehouse and Scott said,Â
"The settlement was without acceptance of liability but both
parties reserve their position in relation to the issue raised in the case. The
terms of that settlement are confidential between parties.
"Both parties recognise
that the tribunal proceedings would have been arduous for all concerned and are
pleased that the matter has been capable of resolution without a public
hearing."
