CBI conference – BBC to beef up news on industrial relations

Director general of the BBC Greg Dyke has pledged to move industrial relations reporting up the BBC news agenda.

Speaking at the CBI annual conference in Birmingham this morning, Dyke claimed that employment relations had been ignored by the mainstream media for the last 20 years.

He said: “Today the labour correspondent barely survives – neither The Times nor The Independent nor the The Daily Telegraph have a labour correspondent. Nor does the BBC.”

“The Guardian has a labour editor but nobody writing about labour issues – whatever their title – can monopolise the pages or the airways in the way they did 20 years ago.”

He has now appointed Jeff Randall, former business editor of The Sunday Times, as the BBC’s new business editor which will include industrial relations reporting.
