Nanjing Automobile Corporation reopens Longbridge car plant with creation of 130 jobs and promise of more to follow

Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC), the Chinese car manufacturer and owner of the MG plant at Longbridge, West Midlands reopened the plant this week, creating 130 jobs immediately, rising to 250 by the end of the year.

The plant had been shut since the collapse of MG Rover in 2005, when 6,000 jobs were lost, along with positions at companies which supplied the company with goods and services.

NAC will manufacture MG TF sports cars at Longbridge plant with models due off the production line later this year.

A spokesperson at the new super union Unite, told Personnel Today: “We welcome the restarting of car production at the Longbridge plant.

“We hope that Nanjing will move towards its stated objectives of creating 1,200 jobs, as many Longbridge workers are still hoping to return to the factory.”
