Vodafone HR staff included in 500-job UK cull

HR jobs at Vodafone face the axe as the mobile communications giant prepares for hundreds of job losses, Personnel Today has learned.

Earlier today Vodafone announced plans to cut 500 jobs in the UK in an attempt to reduce costs.

The move follows an announcement last year that the firm, which employs 10,000 people in the UK, expected to reduce its worldwide operating costs by £1bn a year by 2011, in response to the rising price of raw materials and increased competition.

The 500 job losses include 170 posts at Vodafone’s head office in Newbury, Berkshire, in back-office roles.

A spokeswoman from Vodafone told Personnel Today: “The job cuts are across our business and include a small number of HR roles.”

However, she refused to specify how many, or in what area of the HR department.

The company said: “Vodafone UK has today announced reductions to its operating costs in order for it to compete more effectively in the UK market.”

“As customers look for best value in their mobile services, Vodafone intends to reduce its cost base whilst continuing to invest in new products and services to meet changing customer needs.”
