Engineering software firm Aveva to cut 10% of workforce

Engineering software company Aveva is to slash 10% of its workforce, including positions in HR and training and development.

The UK company said 80 jobs would be cut across the company to counter difficult trading conditions. Funding constraints were causing delays to major new projects and customers were reviewing spending in 2009-10, the firm said.

Hilary Wright, the HR director for Aveva, told Personnel Today that despite progress in line with market forecasts, there would be cuts across all departments, including HR.

“Unfortunately, we do have some at risk in our HR department, including a small headcount reduction in training and development, although no cuts to their budget,” she said.

A survey of 2,000 employers by Hay Group, out this week, found more than one in four were eliminating or decreasing training and development programmes in response to falling revenue.

Wright also said recruitment plans were being cut back in line with the restructure.

“We did have ambitious growth plans in place following five years of steady growth, but there was a change in economic environment. We will continue to monitor our approach throughout the year, and remain heartened by recent government announcements about green energy.”
