Scottish council could cut 700 jobs in effort to save up to £90m

Renfrewshire Council in Scotland could cut hundreds of jobs in an effort to plug funding gaps.

The council said ‘difficult choices’ lie ahead, which could involve cutting 700 jobs by March as it tries to save up to £90m over the next three years.

According to the BBC, the council said it would try to achieve the job cuts through voluntary redundancy and early retirement.

Having cut 300 jobs last year, Renfrewshire Council will consider offering staff shorter working weeks and will review the charges it makes for services.

Council leader Derek Mackay said: We are setting out in detail some of the ways in which the council is looking at reducing costs and making changes so we can focus the reduced resources we will have on essential services.”
