An estimated 450 jobs have been safeguarded after Vosper
Thornycroft won a contract to build three offshore patrol ships for the Royal
Navy.
The company has been selected as the preferred bidder for a
contract to lease three ships to the navy and support them in service.
Vosper Thornycroft’s chief executive Martin Jay, commented,
“We are thrilled by today’s news which continues our long tradition of
supplying ships to the Royal Navy. It provides the bridge we need to keep our
highly skilled workforce together while we finalise matters on the type 45 and
hopefully win new export work.”
Defence procurement minister Baroness Symons, said, “The
method we are using to bring these ships into Royal Navy Service is a very good
example of our determination to search for and find new ways of procuring
better military equipment quickly at lower cost.”
