At
least 8,000 jobs could be at risk after BAE systems threatened to review the
future of three UK warship yards according to reports.
The
giant defence contractor warned that it was only prepared to invest £150m in
its Govan and Scotstoun yards on the Clyde and the Barrow yard in Cumbria if
they could be turned into a profitable business through a partnership with the
Ministry of Defence.
“Clearly
if we get to a situation where there isn’t a way forward we will have to look
at the business overall,” said Sir Dick Evans, BAE’s chairman.
