A road show is touring the country raising awareness among employers of new
guidelines designed to improve the management of risk from asbestos.
The HSE road show, launched in September, will travel up and down the
country until the end of this month.

New rules are being brought in next year that will require owners and
occupiers to determine the presence of asbestos in their buildings and assess
and control the risk.
– One in seven people in the West may have been damaged by exposure to
asbestos, according to research presented at the annual congress of the
European Respiratory Society in September. Researchers re-examined 160
autopsies and found "pleural plaques", a thickening of a lung
membrane suggestive of damage, in 14 per cent of the women, and in 20 per cent
of the men.
