A new work permit system linked to skills shortages will be
introduced by David Blunkett, the new home secretary.
Blunkett claimed over the weekend that he wanted to provide
a controlled, legal route for people seeking work in the UK that would not
threaten the existing workforce.
Variations of both a US-style green card system and an
Australian-style points system are being considered.
Discussions will start soon with employers’ organisations to
draw up statistics on immediate and long-term skills shortages, he told The
Sunday Times.
