The
law that prohibits councils from ‘promoting’ homosexuality has been repealed.
A
successful case has never been brought under Section 28 of the Local Government
Act 1988 and it has been condemned as being legislation that creates and
reinforces prejudice against lesbians and homosexuals.
Unison
general secretary Dave Prentis said the law was unjust and its repeal long
overdue.
"We
must now ensure that real progress is made in tackling homophobia in the
workplace by working with employers to implement the forthcoming Employment
Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations," he said.
