Local
government personnel chiefs are leading a joint action team of employers and
government officials to tackle age discrimination in the workplace.
The
Society of Chief Personnel Officers in Local Government wants to use the
initiative to entice staff who have taken early retirement back to the
workplace to solve the recruitment crisis in local councils.

Senior
officers from Socpo met senior Cabinet ministers, the director general of the
CBI and other leading employers last week to develop an action plan on age
diversity. This aims to build on the DfEE’s voluntary code of practice on age
diversity in employment published last year. Socpo has now been asked to submit
further ideas to the Social Security Secretary Alistair Darling

retirement in local government and that culture has to be addressed. "
