The
Department of Health wants to recruit 80,000 new staff as part of the drive to
cut waiting times.
The
department hopes to have recruited an extra 35,000 nurses, 15,000 GPs and
consultants and 30,000 more therapists and laboratory scientists by 2008 .
The
NHS claimed most of these staff are already training and announced medical
school and nursing college places will also be expanded.
Pay
systems are also to be updated with new contracts for GPs and a redeveloped
nursing pay system is now in the final stages of negotiation.
