The
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) claims its £17.3m investment in a civil
aerospace research programme as ‘crucial to a sustainable manufacturing base
for the UK’.
Industry
minister Jacqui Smith said the funding would be used for various research projects
by Rolls Royce, to explore new technologies and test out the latest in
scientific innovation.
The
new programme, called ATAP-10, will draw on £38.8m in funding over four years
-£17.3m from the DTI, the remainder from Rolls-Royce.

Smith
said that high quality research and innovation was key to the future success of
British manufacturing.
