Incoming European Commission (EC) president, Jose Manuel Durao
Barroso, has announced his new team of commissioners
and their areas of responsibility.
The key individual for Europe’s HR managers over the
next four years will be Vladimir Spidla, of the Czech
Republic, who will become the new EU
commissioner for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities.
Spidla is the Czech
Republic’s outgoing prime minister,
and resigned after his Social Democrat Party suffered a heavy defeat in June’s
European elections.

He should be formally appointed after EU hearings at the end of September,
when he will be grilled on his plans. The Brussels
assembly then has to approve the team as a whole at the end of October before
it can take up its work on 1 November.
