Greene of Harrow Weald (Sidney Greene), general secretary of the National Union
of Railwaymen 1957-75, died last night.

general secretary Brendan Barber said Greene was one of the outstanding union
leaders of a generation that produced many prominent union figures.

"He
began his working life as a railway worker and continued to work for the
benefit of working people through the trade union movement and in a wide range
of public offices,” he said. "He was a massively influential figure both
within the trade union movement and beyond."
