GMB union members are set to begin strike action at a nuclear submarine dockyard tomorrow in Devonport, Plymouth.
More than 100 Health Physics Monitors (HPMs) employed by DML, which operates the dockyard, are responsible for all aspects of safety relating to nuclear work within the dockyard, mainly involving nuclear submarines. They will strike for one day over pay and grading.
GMB senior organiser Gary Smith, said negotiations had been under way for two years, but had been hampered by “appalling behaviour” by DML management.

“Today, a meeting with management lasted less than five minutes, and the company has said it will lock out any workers participating in the proposed limited industrial action,” he said.
Smith said GMB members were “acutely aware” of the safety implications of any strike action.
