The Deputy Prime Minister has called on the construction
industry to deliver safety plans that would prevent many of the 3,000 major injuries
that occur every year by 2010.
Prescott challenged the industry to cut deaths and injuries
by 40 per cent over the next four years.
“It is totally unacceptable that, for much of last year, two
construction workers were killed each week and that, that in the space of one
awful nine day period, five people died,” said Prescott.
A conference to measure the progress of safety measures in
the industry will be held next October.
