The Department of Trade and Industry announced a fundamental review of its
operations last week to improve its effectiveness for business.
Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt hopes an improved DTI will be
able to help modernise UK business’s infrastructure as part of the Government’s
"enterprise agenda".
In a message to DTI staff, Hewitt said she wants to take statutory action to
make markets more dynamic and efficient while safeguarding standards of
protection for staff, and to deliver "first-rate" business support.
Hewitt also wants business to be able to better harness scientific and
technical advances.

"Just as the business world is changing fast to meet huge challenges,
so the DTI must change and adapt," said Hewitt.
"If we are to succeed in our aim of making the UK one of the best
places in the world to do business, we must have the right policies and
practices in place to help businesses turn new and innovative ideas and
technology into prosperity and jobs."
