Airport
authorities have launched an urgent investigation after illegal immigrants were
found working on new buildings at Heathrow.
Eight
construction workers on the £4.2bn Terminal 5 site were arrested on Thursday,
and are awaiting deportation, reports the Daily Mirror.
Airport
owner BAA wants to establish how restricted photo-ID passes that workers on the
security-sensitive site were handed out without full background checks.
It
is understood that the alarm was raised after fellow staff became concerned
that the men could not understand a word of English.
An
immigration spokesman told the newspaper: “Eight immigration offenders were
picked up. They were made up of over-stayers,
illegal entrants and failed asylum-seekers. It is possible that the employer, a
contractor on the site, may be prosecuted.”
