Insurer adds its name to tribunal cost providers

Another provider has pitched into the growing business of insuring against
tribunal costs.

Collegiate Insurance Brokers has set up a service with Amicus Legal to
provide cover against the cost of a tribunal case. In common with other
services it will arrange advice to help employers comply with the growing
volume of employment law, in- cluding a telephone helpline.

It adds to other providers in this rapidly growing sector (News 7 December
1999).

Last year’s cut in the qualifying period for an unfair dismissal claim from
two years to one, and the quadrupling of the maximum award to £50,000, has seen
a jump in the number of court cases.

Legal expenses, which are not recoverable, are typically about £5,000 per
case.
