OH professionals must keep abreast of rapidly changing
employment law, delegates heard.
Employment law expert Joan Lewis outlined the most
significant recent changes.Â
Most recent changes include:
– The right not to be discriminated against for being a
part-time worker
– The right to be accompanied, for example, by a trade union
representative.
– Rights for union recognition where this is supported by a
majority of the workforce.
"Employees can bring a claim to tribunals at little
cost risk," said Lewis. "Workers can self represent, instruct
representatives or contact voluntary organisations to assist them."
Other laws to be aware of include a £5,000 fine for not
having a health and safety at work policy, and the statutory minimum wage. She
said that attention must be paid to proper equality procedures on equality,
anti-harassment, and grievances.
