Mentoring scheme at Nationwide promotes women managers

by Personnel Today 23 Apr 2001

Nationwide
is introducing a mentoring scheme aimed at increasing the percentage of women
in senior management positions in the company.

The UK’s
largest building society has set itself a target of having 28-29 per cent of
women in senior management positions.

Dennis
Brockwell, Nationwide’s Personnel and Development Director explained that the
mentoring scheme will involve junior female managers shadowing their senior
counterparts.

The
mentors, who occupy director and senior manager positions will also be
available to provide career advice, added Brockwell.

He said,
“We want to take positive action to break the glass ceiling. This mentoring
scheme will be specifically tailored to women.”

Brockwell
explained that the scheme will be rolled-out across all business units at
Nationwide where currently 73 per cent of staff are women.
