The main employment law issues that are likely to affect occupational health
professionals in the near future were lucidly explained by well-known
employment law consultant Joan Lewis.

She reviewed the main changes that took place in 2000 including the Human
Rights Act, the Data Protection Act and the Part Time Workers Regulations. She
also looked at the proposed changes for 2001 including the Data Protection
Commissioner’s Code of Practice which will have particular significance for
occupational health with reference to the keeping of records and provision of
medical reports.
Lewis also explained case law and best practice in a variety of areas. These
included disability discrimination and maternity suspensions as well as
vicarious liability, working time limitations and issues relating to home
working.
