Pay up by 13% in IT – but staff must improve ‘soft skills’

IT
staff have been awarded pay increases of up to 13 per cent over the past year,
according to a survey by recruitment specialists Hays IT.

The
research shows that systems administrators’ pay has risen on average by 13.2
per cent and systems analysts’ salaries have gone up by 7.8 per cent.

Project
managers’ pay increased year-on-year by a more modest 3.2 per cent.

Commenting
on the findings, Nick Cox, managing director of Hays IT, said, "The salary
increases we are measuring are testament to the value placed on key IT staff by
many businesses, large and small."

Cox
advised IT professionals to improve their "soft skills" such as team
working and presentation, if they want to secure the best jobs. "It’s
crucial to ensure your interpersonal skills aren’t left behind while you
develop technically," he added.
