Public sector employees to get housing grants

The Government has announced a scheme to provide affordable housing for at least 10,000 nurses, teachers and police.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said the DETR plans to spend £250m on housing over the next three years.

The department is looking for bids from registered social landlords, local authorities and other public and private-sector companies for the money.

These public-sector workers will be able to claim grants towards house purchases but to be eligible they must buy a property either on the open market or through a development scheme.

Unison’s deputy general secretary Keith Sonnet said the scheme would create division between support staff at hospitals and schools.

“The plan to help nurses is a good one but you cannot run hospitals without cleaners, cooks, porters and others,” he said.
