The
Royal Air Force is planning to close its Lyneham base by 2012, with the loss of
around 2,140 jobs.
The
station, near Swindon in Wiltshire, is being closed in favour of another base,
Brize Norton. It is expected 2,500 service personnel will be transferred.
It
is also thought that 1,780 service posts and 360 civilian jobs could be lost.

Lyneham is home to 50 Hercules transport planes and is currently running
operations in Iraq.
