There is a new forum for OH
managers and senior advisers in retail and distribution businesses.
It will be spearheaded
by Tesco OH manager Judy Baker-RogersÂ
and builds on informal contacts built up by managers at Tesco, Waitrose,
Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s.
"We are sitting
in offices writing policies, so why not share ideas so that we can get best
practice for the industry?" said Baker-Rogers.
The sector is more
dangerous than people realise, she added. "It is a manual handling operation
and we have all the health issues associated with that – such as back injuries
and upper limb disorders."
Assaults on night
staff by drunken customers is a growing problem in 24-hour supermarkets, she
added. And bakery staff often have a problem with asthma.
