The Royal Mail Group has appointed
its first-ever company-wide HR director as part of its bid to return the
organisation to profitability.
Tony McCarthy, whose previous jobs
include group HR director at BAE Systems and personnel director of Royal
Ordnance, will start his position as board HR director in the New Year.
McCarthy will focus on improving the
morale of the group’s 200,000 employees and helping them to improve the
organisation’s performance.
McCarthy said: "I am delighted
to join the Royal Mail. There is no doubting the challenge of the job – but I
would not have accepted the job unless I was convinced the company can be
turned around. It can and it will."
Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton
believes McCarthy will play a key role in driving through improvements to
service.
He said: "His role will be to
make sure that the company’s frontline people and managers get all the support
possible to carry out their roles.

"It is very simple – if people
feel good about their jobs, that is bound to feed through to a better service
to customers. It is Royal Mail employees who will achieve the turnaround,
no-one else."
