A
private members bill to outlaw age discrimination will get its second reading today.
The
Age Equality Commission Bill, introduced by MP Candy Atherton, calls for the
creation of an age equality commission to examine all aspects of age equality
in society. It would also advise the Government on legislation over issues
including discrimination.
Sam
Mercer, campaign director of the Employers Forum on Age, said her organisation
welcomed a debate on the creation of a commission.

"But
that debate should not ignore the fact that there may be a better model for the
UK that puts all diversity issues on an equal footing and avoids the extra
burden of creating separate bodies to monitors discrimination," she said.
