Trade unions call for boost to minimum wage

Some
low paid workers are being forced to live "on the margins of
society", according to the chairman of the Low Pay Commission.

Adair
Turner said that people can struggle to survive on £4.20 an hour and his
admission has prompted calls from trade unions to boost the statutory rate.

When
Turner was director-general of the CBI, the organisation opposed a minimum wage
at any level – claiming it would of destroy jobs.

However,
Turner said he is now aware "of people whose standard of living puts them
on the margins of society in London".

The
Low Pay Commission is reviewing the rate of the minimum wage and is expected to
fix a two-year formula early next year.
