• Inspecting training providers plays a vital role in driving up standards, the Training Standards Council claimed last week.
About 85 per cent of providers deemed unsatisfactory last year were judged to be satisfactory or better when reinspected this year, the TSC’s report for 1999-2000 shows.
“Nobody is better at improving fast than training providers,” said David Sherlock, TSC chief inspector.
Pubs measure service
• A toolkit to allow pubs and bars to measure their success in customer service and identify areas for improvement has been launched by the Hotel and Catering International Management Association.
The kit is designed to help organisations achieve the Hospitality Assured standard, launched in 1998 to recognise and reward customer service excellence.

Map to end confusion
• The eight national training organisations representing the media and cultural industries, are to draw up a map of the wide range of academic and vocational qualifications offered in the sector.
The research is needed to end the confusion over the nature and purpose of existing qualifications in an industry that employs 1.4 million people and generates revenue of £60bn.
Skillset, the broadcast, film and video NTO, will manage the project.
