The
UK needs an official offshoring strategy so that its service sector employment
can continue to grow, the TUC has claimed.
In
a submission, made in response to the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI)
consultation on offshoring, the union called for a best practice guide that
companies would be required to follow if they were offshoring services.
The
TUC recommendations also call for a mapping exercise and assessment of all jobs
at risk to provide an accurate picture of the current situation and potential
developments across every UK region.
TUC
general secretary Brendan Barber said business arguments for offshoring were
"often flawed and short-sighted".
The
TUC is calling on companies to:
•
present a thorough business case to justify plans to move jobs
•
fully consult staff and unions on any plans
