The
new head of the TUC wants to increase union membership by targeting employees
in the private sector.
Brendan
Barber, the new general secretary of the TUC, explained his plans for the
future during the vice-chancellor’s lecture at City University, London.
He
said the decline in union membership had now levelled out and he hoped to start
seeing the figures grow.
Barber
said the area for real growth in numbers was the modern service sector.
He
also highlighted the need to broaden the union agenda and concentrate on its
relationship with the Government and other political parties.
