Education - further and higher

University of Glamorgan

by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005
by Personnel Today 7 Sep 2005

HR-related or specific courses:  BA (Hons) and HND in Human Resource Management designed to give students the possibility of obtaining the maximum exemptions from the examinations of the CIPD; MSc in HRM (dissertation stage) and the PGDip in HRM for both full (one year) and part time (two-year) routes. Students have the option of either exiting at the Diploma stage or going on to complete the full MSc HRM (Masters Dissertation stage) of the programme. The PGDip is accredited by the CIPD and leads to Graduate membership.

Founded: 1992 – Although the University of Glamorgan celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2002, its origins go back to 1913 when it was founded as the South Wales School of Mines. Prior to becoming a university, it had been the Polytechnic of Wales since 1975.

College CV: The University of Glamorgan is Wales’ leading vocational higher education institution and the second largest university in Wales, with nearly 18,000 students and 1,300 staff. It is the only university in Wales and the eighth in the UK to achieve IIP (Investors in People) standard, reflecting a commitment to staff training and development as a progressive institution. The University of Glamorgan has an outstanding track record in enterprise education and is home to the Welsh Enterprise Institute.

Entry: Competition for many of the University of Glamorgan Business School’s programmes is strong, but it is committed to widening access to higher education. Entry criteria can be flexible for those who come from non-traditional backgrounds such as mature students or those with significant industrial experience. Applicants for the PGDip HRM will normally possess a first degree (at least second class honours or GPA of 2.75) or a professional qualification deemed to be of an equivalent standard. In exceptional circumstances, applicants with three years’ or more significant general management or personnel management or comparable experience can be considered. Applicants for the Masters Dissertation Stage will normally have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management or hold corporate level membership of the CIPD and have relevant work and/or academic experience.

Star Academics:  Professor Russ Vince, who has an international reputation in the field of group relations and other aspects of organisational learning.

Alumni: There is an active alumni network.
