• Staff in security and the protective services are at greatest risk of violence at work, according to Home Office figures.
Combined figures from the 1994, 1996 and 1998 British Crime Surveys show that 11.4 per cent might expect an assault in one year, while 5.3 per cent might be threatened. Nurses are the second most vulnerable group, at 5 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively.

The figure for care workers and public transport staff is 2.8 per cent. In education, excluding teachers, and hospitality, it is 2.6 per cent; for teachers and retail sales staff it is 1.8 per cent.
