Matsushita builds talent

Japanese electronics giant Matsushita is getting strategic about succession
planning in its European outposts, using assessment centres, executive coaching
and benchmarking to develop its own future managing directors.

It is working with HR consultancy DDI on the programme launched 18 months
ago for its top 100 senior managers in Europe.

As part of the programme, the company has established a European Talent
Review Board of directors of all the main functions to identify staff with
leadership potential. Candidates are then assessed against key leadership
competencies, and work with a DDI coach to draw up a development plan.
Matsushita is also using the data to benchmark its leadership strength against
other organisations.
