CAC recruits HR expertise

HR professionals from Rolls-Royce, Rover Group and Securicor are among a
slew of high-profile appointments to the Central Arbitration Committee.

Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers announced the appointments last
week.

The expanded committee, which includes more than 15 HR specialists, will
rule on union recognition claims brought as a result of the Government’s
Employee Relations Act.

It will be chaired by Sir Michael Burton, a high court judge, who acted for
News International during the Wapping dispute.

The committee has seven deputy chairmen and 32 members drawn from HR, the
law, industrial relations and trade unions.

The posts were advertised in the national press and resulted in some 900
applications.

They include Eamonn Barry, general manager of human resources at
Rolls-Royce, Rover Group personnel director David Bower and Maureen Chambers,
employee relations manager at Coutts.

Announcing the appointments Byers said, "The successful candidates have
been drawn from both sides of industry and a wide range of sectors. They all
have a tremendous amount to offer."

Sir Michael added, "We will have some of the most respected experts in
employment relations and in employment law, and leading figures from trade
unions and from industry."
