This week’s news in brief: UK’s largest website

RBI and ABG Recruitment, the commercial division of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, have agreed a strategic alliance to
create the UK’s largest web site for accountancy recruitment.The venture will
also bring together the industry’s two leading titles, PASS from RBI and the
ABG’s Accountancy. RBI will take responsibility for on-line recruitment which
will be headed by totaljobs.com

Voluntary work

Encouraging older staff to get involved with voluntary work, would be
considered by 95 per cent of local authorities, according to research by the
National Centre for Volunteering and the Local Government Association.

They are leading a project named Maverick, to prompt councils to encourage
volunteering as a way of older staff members and those nearing retirement to
improve their quality of life and remain active in the workplace.

Youth unemployment

A budget of £455.5m has been earmarked by the Government to pay for
improvements to the New Deal for young people and to extend the New Deal for
the over-25s and people with disabilities.

Employment minister Tessa Jowell said: "We are embarking on the next
stage of the transformation of the welfare state into the working state
building on a strong economy and the near eradication of youth
unemployment."

Stress management

The IPD has published a guide on stress management. Conquer Your Stress by
professors Cary Cooper and Stephen Palmer highlights the symptoms of stress and
suggests practical ways to reduce it.

Tackling pressure

Public-sector union Unison has also published a guide on tackling stress.
Designed for safety representatives, it gives advice on what stress policies
should contain, monitoring stress levels, and supporting stressed staff.
"We want employers to take stress seriously and work with safety
representatives to prevent employees having their lives ruined by stress,"
said Hugh Robertson, head of health and safety.

Tip-top chip shop

A Yorkshire chip shop with just one employee has won a top national health
and safety week award. Maddox of Selby, which serves up to 1,000 customers a
week was among 30 organisations, including Nationwide Building Society, and
British Sugar to receive a Health and Safety Executive award from environment
minister Lord Whitty last week.
