Racially abused Army chef awarded £22,000 by tribunal

A racially abused Army chef has been awarded £22,000 in compensation from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Kerry Hylton was racially abused by a lance corporal colleague while serving with the Welsh Guard.

Hylton received a payout last April for the racist insults, but lodged another claim that was due to be heard last week. But it has now emerged a settlement with the MoD has been reached.

Hylton, who left his £22,000-a-year job in the Royal Logistics Corps in March 2008, claimed officers locked him and his family in their married Army quarters by super-gluing the door shut, an incident which forced him, his wife and their children to move out of their home.

Legal papers submitted to the employment tribunal show Hylton claimed he was racially abused on a regular basis and was punched by an officer.

Hylton said he had been arrested by the Royal Military Police when he complained that an officer racially abused him and punched him.

He also complained that superior officers nicknamed him “Paris Hilton”, even though he had said he found it offensive, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The MoD said Hylton was awarded a total of £22,202 compensation – £18,500 for injury to feelings, £1,500 aggravated damages, and a further £2,202 interest.

The lance corporal who racially abused Hylton is still thought to be with the Army and has been disciplined internally.

An MoD spokesman said: “The MoD accepted in June 2008 that Hylton was subjected to racial harassment and discrimination, and clearly regrets that this happened.

“There is no place for harassment or discrimination of any sort in the Armed Forces and we are committed at the highest levels of leadership to dealing with it.”
