Recession forces drop in non-EU workers in the UK

The economic downturn has led to a cut in the number of UK jobs being offered to non-EU workers, according to a panel that advises the government, the BBC has reported.

The report added that there has been a drop from 700,000 jobs in the ‘skills shortage list’ to 500,000 over the past 12 months, and the panel has recommend that positions in industries such as construction and engineering be removed from the list amid the recession.

UK employers can recruit skilled non-EU workers under a points-based system when they cannot fill a vacancy or the post is on the list of shortage occupations.
