Four sector skills councils relicensed after audit process

Four sector skills councils (SSCs) have been relicensed following an audit process by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES).

Skills for Health, SkillsActive (active leisure and learning), Improve (food and drink manufacturing and processing) and Skills for Justice have all been given the green light to continue operating.

Sector skills councils are employer-led bodies, established to enable firms to exert influence on the UK’s education and skills systems to ensure they meet their needs.

Skills for Care and Development, which covers social care, children, early years and young people, is still being assessed, with its relicense is pending.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson said: “Employers can be confident that the four SSCs relicensed today after tough assessments will continue to provide them with a first-class service in meeting their skill needs.”

The relicensing process is overseen and managed by UKCES through a panel chaired by Charlie Mayfield, who is also chairman of the John Lewis Partnership.
