Tesco has pledged to support its staff by hiring their redundant family members and friends to fill temporary Christmas vacancies.
Almost 20% of Tesco employees have a family member or friend who has lost their job in the past 12 months, and the retailer has said it will look to hire these people to fill the 6,000 temporary jobs it will create this Christmas.
The supermarket giant will launch a new recruitment drive this month encouraging current employees to refer friends and family for the seasonal vacancies.
Lorna Bryson, head of resourcing operations at Tesco, said: “This year we want to give extra support to our staff’s friends and families over the festive period.

“By offering these temporary roles we hope to provide our staff and their relatives with extra help, supporting those who have been most affected by the economic downturn.”
Sainsburys previously announced it would take on 20,000 temporary staff over the Christmas period.
